The Mathew Samuel Legacy

Dr. Mathew Samuel Kalarickal (6 January 1948 – 18 April 2025), widely recognised as the Father of Angioplasty in India, played a defining role in shaping the evolution of interventional cardiology in the country. Trained under angioplasty pioneer Dr. Andreas Grüntzig, he returned to India and performed the country’s first angioplasty in 1986. His career was marked by groundbreaking coronary interventions, advances in clinical practice, and the training of generations of interventional cardiologists.
His greatest legacy was not simply the procedures he introduced, it was his courage to challenge convention, willingness to embrace innovation, clinical judgement in complex situations, and commitment to advancing the field through shared knowledge and experience.
That spirit lives on through Sentient Coronary Complications.
The “Dr. Mathew Samuel Kalarickal Case of the Year Award” celebrates cases that reflect these qualities: clinical excellence, courage, innovation, and exceptional problem-solving.
